What is a BJ41?
Toyota first introduced a 4 cylinder diesel 40 series Land Cruiser in 1974. Despite the engine designation “B” having been previously used for a gasoline engine, Toyota switched the designation to their new 4 cylinder diesel engine and the legendary line of “B” series diesels was born. The original BJ40 was sold in most markets in RHD and LHD versions. Cheap gas and a distaste for diesels (caused by GM) kept the model (and most diesels in general) from hitting dealerships the United States.
This model, the BJ41, was specific to the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) and was introduced in 1980 with a transitional engine, the 2B. Slightly larger than the B diesel, the 2B had better emissions than its predecessor and filled the gap between the B and the 3B in Japan. Sold only between 1980 and 1982 and nearly exclusively in Japan, the model is quite rare and definitely worthy of the stage 3 restoration we gave it!
