Is the 80 Series the Last “Real” Land Cruiser Sold in the US?

A lot of people say yes, and it’s hard to argue with them. Here’s why.

The 80 Series was the last Land Cruiser Toyota sold in America with a solid front axle. After 1997, 80 series  production for the US market ended. While Toyota kept a live axle (solid front axle) in many Land Cruiser variants for other markets,  they  switched to an independent front suspension, or IFS for the model sold here (the 100 series) A lot of enthusiasts will tell you that change made the newer Cruisers softer on the road but weaker and less capable off-road. There are also fewer suspension upgrades available for IFS.

It wasn’t just the front axle and suspension that we lost. When the 80 Series left, so did the option of factory front and rear locking differentials. If you don’t know, electric locking differentials are devices that “lock” the right and left axles together for maximum off road traction, on demand. An 80 Series with factory lockers is one of the most capable off-road vehicles Toyota ever built, and it’s surprisingly good on the highway too.

That combination — solid axles, lockers, legendary durability, and real off-road capability is exactly why the 80 Series has gotten so popular with enthusiasts and overlanders. The aftermarket has fully embraced it. I’d say right now there are probably more aftermarket  parts and accessories available for the 80 Series than any other Land Cruiser model.

These trucks are also getting older, which means we’re seeing a lot more restorations. Right now, 80 Series builds make up nearly half of our schedule for the next two years. We offer two levels: our Stage 2 restoration is a body disassembled. glass-out, interior-out refinish that gives you a beautiful truck without touching frame or engine bay (sometimes) A Stage 3 is a full body-off restoration,  every single component, down to the last clip, clamp, and spring. That’s the show-quality level.

The FZJ80 we’re featuring with this post is a fresh Stage 2+ restoration that just rolled out of the shop. It’s got pretty much every upgrade we offer, LS3 swap, 6L80 transmission, OME lift with BP-51 shocks, full armor, solar, winch, kitchen, the works. It combines form and function at the highest level.
