Wait—what? A BJ46? What’s that? Most people have never heard of the BJ46, an obscure 40 Series Land Cruiser variant exclusive to the Japanese market. Like the FJ43, this mid-wheelbase model is about 14 inches longer overall than the standard J40, with a wheelbase approximately 6 inches longer. Along with the BJ44, it is one of the only mid-wheelbase J40 models that came with an OEM hardtop. This 1983 BJ46 also sports the unique “zebra stripe” interior and a host of interior trim panels that were available only in this model and certain LX versions of the 40 Series.
This BJ46 came to us on consignment. We sold it through our for-sale page to one of our favorite clients and friends. Largely a survivor, this rare diesel Land Cruiser did not need much. We removed the fiberglass top to rebuild the steel rain gutter, which had rusted out, and patched rust on the upper body sides. A complete top refinish, a new headliner, and minimal paintwork on the body preserved the survivor character of this unique rig.
