Full vehicle description
In the world of 80 Series Land Cruisers, I think there might be three variations that one could argue are the “Holy Grail” of the 80 Series. Some might argue that the Holy Grail is a US-spec 1997 40th Anniversary or Collector’s Edition 80 Series with factory locking differentials. Others would argue that a locked HDJ81 with a 1HD-FTE should hold that spot. But for me, this one right here, available now for sale, would be the one I choose as the most collectible edition of the 80 Series.
You see, I’ve seen plenty of the other two mentioned above. I bet I could pretty easily find numerous examples of each of them for sale right now. But this one? This one I have never seen before, and I can’t find another one like it anywhere. This is a 51,926-kilometer, mint-condition, standard-package HZJ81.
What is the standard package? Enthusiast slang for this level of build would be a “poverty pack” 80. Others would call it NATO spec or UN spec. Toyota never used these terms, but they all mean the same thing: an 80 Series without many creature comforts. Depending upon how you define “options,” though, this Land Cruiser has all of them!
This is a no-nonsense, mechanical-diesel, ultimately reliable 80 Series meant to be all business. It’s a dream vehicle and very likely the nicest one in existence. I don’t have a scarcity mindset, but I can’t imagine the opportunity to own a Land Cruiser like this coming up again.
